DJ Producteur italien, membre du collectif Numa Crew, T.KAY jongle entre dubstep et jungle drum & bass. Ses dernières sorties cartonnent, notamment le Bandulu remix de Cornell Campbell, classique de reggae, remixé à la sauce jungle.
Qu’est-ce que le Numa Crew ?
C’est le collectif que nous avons créé il y a plus de 10 ans dans le but de promouvoir tous le spectre de la musique UK Underground en Italie. Nous sommes 7 et venons tous d’horizons musicaux différents : Lapo, T-kay, Leonard P, Ago, Hypegrade et les MCs Ninjaz et XlMad. La plupart d’entre nous étions ensemble au lycée. Chacun a son propre rôle : par exemple MC Ninjaz est aussi un graphiste talentueux et réalise tous nos artworks, un autre s’occupe de la promotion sur les réseaux sociaux, un autre encore s’occupe de la partie mixage et ingénierie de nos productions.
Vous avez lancé fin 2018 un nouveau label Numa Recordings qui s’est fait remarquer avec le morceau We huh tek talk. Pourquoi avoir créé votre propre label ?
Nous sentions le besoin de sortir nos productions musicales de manière régulière et avec notre propre touche. Cette première sortie est orientée reggae grime mais nous avons l’intention de couvrir tous les styles de bass music. Nous avons également pas mal de morceaux qui méritent de sortir et je pense que Numa Recordings est le bon média. Est prévu un 4 titres au format digital, suivi de deux tueries au format vinyle. Nous sommes très impatients !
Quelles sont tes influences musicales ?
J’ai grandi en écoutant de la jungle D&B oldschool et du reggae dancehall qui sont mes principales influences musicales. Mais j’ai toujours adoré le son des 90’s, notamment le hip hop et le reggae digital, ainsi que la funk et le dub des 70’s. Je pense que c’est ce mélange qui influence mes morceaux.
Comment es-tu arrivé au mix et à composer tes propres morceaux ?
J’ai débuté la production musicale à 14 ans, en essayant de faire des beats hip hop. J’ai découvert la jungle D&B en free partys début 2000. J’ai trouvé ça bien plus intéressant que la majorité des sons techno et hard tech de l’époque, à des années lumières de tout ce que j’avais pu entendre. À l’âge de 16 ans, j’ai commencé à me mettre plus sérieusement à la musique électronique, grâce au grand frère d’un pote qui était technicien du son et qui avait Reason 1.0 installé sur le PC qu’on utilisait pour jouer aux jeux vidéo. Cela m’a permis de découvrir ce logiciel (que j’utilise toujours d’ailleurs) et le potentiel de la MAO. Quelques années plus tard, j’ai finalement réussi à trouver une paire de platines et j’ai commencé à jouer des disques, apprendre à mixer et deejayer, jouant principalement de la jungle D&B et un peu de reggae.
Quelle est la place de la scène bass music en Italie ?
La scène bass music en Italie commence à atteindre une taille intéressante. La partie D&B commence à bien grossir, il y a des producteurs de dub et dubstep vraiment cools, et pleins de sound system reggae, du Nord au Sud du pays. Les « massives » (N.D.L.R. : le public) commencent à avoir une véritable culture, ils connaissent le nom des morceaux et sont demandeurs. Les choses évoluent positivement et on assiste à un véritable changement ces dernières années.
Quelles sont tes prochaines sorties ?
J’ai différentes sorties de prévues, en single mais aussi quelques morceaux sur des compilations. Je travaille actuellement sur plusieurs remixes officiels. J’ai une collaboration en cours avec mon pote Ago (Numa Crew) qui devrait sortir sur notre label Numa Recordings et dont je suis vraiment content. Je ne peux pas en dire plus pour l’instant, mais j’ai aussi d’autres projets en cours et il devrait y avoir quelques bonnes surprises bientôt. Stay tuned !
As-tu d’autres projets ?
J’ai démarré récemment une série de free download intitulé Indoor Audio, dans le but de sortir uniquement des morceaux gratuits à moi, des remixes et bootlegs non officiels mais aussi quelques originaux. Je travaille également en tant que technicien du son pour le projet dancehall Kalymatic Sound de mon brother XlMad, pour qui j’ai entièrement mixé le dernier album qui vient juste de sortir. Je suis aussi les productions d’autres groupes locaux de reggae et d’artistes hip-hop.

Could you introduce yourself, what are your influences and what is your favourite music?
I’m a d’n’b/jungle deejay/producer based in Florence, Italy, and I’m a member of the Italian Music Collective « Numa Crew ». I produce predominantly jungle and drum n bass, but I also make hip hop/reggae/dancehall/dub riddims and grime (Es.We Nuh Tek Talk feat KIlla’s Army), and I’ve released my track for labels as Nice Up!, Serial Killaz, LiondubInt., Roots Rec, Audio Addict, Runtingz; to name few. I literally grew up listening to old school jungle/dnb & reggae-dancehall music, that are my two main musical influences, but basically I always had a great feel for anything that brings the 90’s sound flavour (es.digital reggae – hip hop) and 70’s sound flavour (es. funk – Dub) and think it had been crucial on the imprint of my productions.
How did you come to mix and produce?
I have been around music production from the age of 14, trying to make hip hop beats.
I discovered jungle and D’n’B at free rave parties in the early 2000s, it was way more interesting than the main TECHNO/HARDTECH sounds, it was basically lightyears ahead of any other music genre I had listened before.
When i was 16 i started to learn to make electronic music more seriously, because a friend of mine’s big brother was a sound technician, and they had REASON 1.0 installed on the PC they were sharing at home, which we used to play a lot of video-games, this led me to discover the software (which i still use) and the potential of the computer music production. Some years later, I’ve finally managed to find a pair of turntables to start spin records and learning how to mix and deejay, playing mostly dnb/jungle and a bit of reggae music.
Is the bass music scene big in Italy?
In Italy we have reached a satisfying bass scene in the last decade I think, there is a nice and still growing dnb family, some real cool dub/dubstep producers, and a lot of reggae sound systems from the north to the south of our nation.
Also, the people, « the Massive », is getting more tending to have knowledge of the different music genres, they know the tune’s name and they are becoming demanding also, things are growing right and I can tell it because I saw how much has changed from te years to now.
Do you have forthcoming releases?
Yes! I do have some new forthcoming releases: some singles, some tracks in few V.A. compilations, and I m currently working on many officials remixes. Got a collaboration with my man Ago (numa crew) in the new release on our label Numa Recordings which I’m very happy of, and that should be out before summer. Cannot say more details but I’m working also on many other projects and might have some surprises soon. So better stay tuned!
What about Numa Crew? Who are the main members? how did you meet? who does what?
Well, Numa crew is our collective, a project that we started from scratch more than one-year ago designed to push the full specrtum of UK based underground music here in our country, and also more globally.
We have all come from different musical past experiences, and we are a lot.. 7 members, 5 deejays & 2 Mcs (DEEJAYS:Lapo/T-kay/Leonard P/Ago/Hypegrade MCS:Ninjaz/XlMad). Most of us were together at high school and knew each other from a time before starting the project. Anyone in the crew has his own role apart from produce or DJ’ing, to make a few examples: one of our MCS Ninjaz is also a very talented writer and graphic designer, and it taking care of the realization of almost all our artworks, one of us I taking care of the social media promotion, one of us is taking off the mix engineering of the productions etc.
End of 2018, you started a new record label “Numa Recordings” which banged with ‘We huh tek talk”. Why did you make this new label? And is there a forthcoming release?
We have started « Numa Recordings » because we felt the need to release our certain sound on a regular and with our specific brand. It was also because we found ourselves with a lot of productions and material that was worth to release, and we weren’t sure about what right label or channel could be to do it right. We definitely have many forthcoming releases, next one is a digital 4 track EP, and after that, we’ll be releasing vinyl again, we got two bangers that we literally can’t wait to drop! We started this label with a reggae grime release, but we intend to cover all the styles of bass music from dub to dnb.
Do you have other projects?
Recently I started a free download series for my own dnb production called: « INDOOR AUDIO », with the purpose to release only free tracks, unofficial remixes, bootlegs, aecc. and also original tracks. I also work as a mixing technician for the dancehall kalymatic sound project, by my brother numa xl mad, to whom I mixed the last album just released. I am also following the production of other local reggae and hip hop artists.
